After reading Andre's post, I had a hunch that it was the Java console causing the problem. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the Domino Server Java Console was created for use with Windows Server 2008 because of new security features Microsoft introduced in it's release. In our case it was also being used on a Windows 2003 server.
We had not tried to upgrade another server to 8.5.3 since we had issues with the first one. Since I needed to upgrade Traveler to 8.5.3, which is on a Windows 2003 server, this was my chance to try this theory.
I removed the -jc and -c switches from the "Path to excecutable:" on the service properties (I did this through the registry), installed the 8.5.3 upgrade, rebooted the server and it came up perfectly. Everything was running fine, so I shut down the server, installed the Traveler 8.5.3 upgrade, rebooted and it came up fine, too. All in all, it took about 20 minutes.
Now, granted, this was not a partitioned server like the first one I tried to upgrade...I hope to retry the upgrade on it later this week. If I have any issues with the partitions, I'll post more here.
Thanks to all who commented and helped get this figured out.
